Sorry if this offends, but those restaurants are probably the complete opposite of “hippest”!!! They are like NYC Classics that your parents would want to hang out at!

    Hippest:

    Del Posto
    Spice Market
    Megu
    Babbo
    Spotted Pig

And by hippest, I mean place that are very hard to get into, places where all the young and hip celebrities hang out, and places with the well-know young and trendy chefs.

Now, I’m not a New Yorker, but I just had to put my 2 cents in – I’m guessing “Hell’s Kitchen” is one of the 5?

    Of all time? Or currently?

Some of the better known ones are :
    Tavern on the Green
    Elaine’s
The Russian Tea Room (sadly its closed now)
    The 205 Bar
    Tenjune
    Time Out New York Lounge
    Rain West
    Panevino Ristorante
    The Capital Grill
    Patroon

There are a couple thousand others.

My Zagat 2007 arrived yesterday. . . . the top 5 favorites are
    1. Grammercy Tavern
    2. Union Square Cafe
    3. Le Bernardin
    4. Babbo
    5. Peter Luger

5 “hippest” I think is a matter of opinion. There is a list of ‘Trendy restaurants’ which is almost 100 restaurants long & alphabeticalized not rated 1 – whatever. Grammercy Tavern is listed under Trendy. Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain is listed as well. Daniel Boulud’s Bistro Moderne is listed & his food is ethereal.
